George
Vassila of Electro-magnetic Test Services writes
Electro-Magnetic Compatibility (EMC)
is the ability of an electrical or electronics system to
function as intended within an electro-magnetic
environment. To put it simply, in an environment where
products are EMC compatible, a TV receiver, a PC, an
electric drill and a mobile phone can operate
simultaneously without interfering with each other.
In 1996, during the
process of establishing a single market, the EU
introduced a number of directives, which regulated
product compliance, hence enabling products to be traded
across borders without national restrictions. One of
these directives is the EMC Directive 89/336/EEC which
has recently been superceded by the latest amended 2004/1
08/EC. All products placed on the EU market must meet the
essential requirements of this directive and be affixed
with the CE mark. This is a legal requirement. Failure to
do so can result in the withdrawal of products from the
entire EU market, with fines and, in some cases,
imprisonment.
